real vs fake mad honey — do any of the at-home tests actually work?
ive read about ten different pages on real vs fake mad honey now and every one gives me a different at home test. burn in the throat, drop it in water, does it crystallise, hold it up to the light. does any of that actually mean anything or am i just doing kitchen magic
Kitchen tests tell you something about honey in general, not about this honey in particular. The things that have actually helped me are boring and none of them happen at your counter: a batch or lot number on the jar that also appears on the test document, a report from a lab the seller doesn't own, a collection date and a named district rather than "the Himalayas". If the paperwork and the jar never reference each other, the paperwork is decoration.
the throat burn one gets repeated everywhere and it does nothing does it. i had one jar that stung and one that didnt, same guy same season
@Jake yeah. crystallisation is the other one people have backwards, thats just glucose doing glucose things, depends on the nectar and how cold your cupboard is. plenty of real honey sets solid and plenty of cheap syrup stays runny forever
guy at a market did the whole performance for me once, held it up to the sun, tipped the spoon, explained how it ropes properly. genuinely lovely theatre. still couldnt tell me which valley it came from
