UK post-Brexit honey import situation — what I found out
Based in the UK and trying to understand if I can legally order mad honey shipped directly from Nepal. Post-Brexit the rules seem to have changed but I can't find a clear answer. Has anyone navigated this recently?
I've looked into this. The relevant UK rules post-Brexit:
Honey from Nepal falls under APHA (Animal and Plant Health Agency) border control requirements as a product of animal origin. For commercial quantities, there are pre-notification requirements, health certificates, and POAO border controls. For personal import — a jar or two for your own use — the practical enforcement is significantly lighter.
The formal answer is: declare it as a food product of animal origin. In practice, small personal quantities rarely trigger anything. The risk of not declaring is a customs violation if caught, which you'd want to avoid. Declare it honestly and you're fine.
I've ordered twice to a UK address since Brexit — both from sellers with professional shipping setups. Both arrived fine. The first was delayed at customs for about a week, the second came through in 10 days with no delays at all. I declared both as honey from Nepal on the relevant forms. No questions, no issues. Use a seller who ships with proper commercial documentation, declare it honestly, and don't overthink it.
