Mad honey vs. kava — different tools for different things
I've used kava for several years and I'm curious how mad honey compares. Not looking to replace kava — just trying to understand where each fits and whether they're even in the same category of experience.
Different mechanisms and different use cases:
Kava: Primary effect through kavalactones modulating GABA-A receptors. Anxiolytic (reduces anxiety), muscle relaxant, mildly euphoric. Hepatotoxicity concerns with heavy or extract-based use. Onset 15–30 minutes; duration 2–4 hours. Deep communal use tradition in Pacific island cultures.
Mad honey / grayanotoxin: Voltage-gated sodium channel modulator — a different mechanism despite both affecting sodium channels to some degree. Primary effects are cardiovascular: bradycardia, hypotension, physical warmth and heaviness. No significant anxiolytic effect in the kava sense. No hepatotoxicity concerns established. Longer onset (30–60 min). More physically oriented experience.
They're both in the "relaxant" category but the experience profile and risk profiles are different. They're not substitutes for each other.
Personal comparison: I use both for sleep and relaxation. Kava helps more with the mental/anxiety component — quiets a busy mind. Mad honey is more physical — slows the body down, creates a heavy warmth. Some nights one is right, some nights the other. I've never felt the need to combine them and wouldn't — different cardiovascular loads, and the experiences serve slightly different purposes for me.
The hepatotoxicity concern with heavy kava use (particularly extracted products vs. traditional preparation) is worth noting as a long-term consideration that doesn't apply to mad honey. Different risk profiles on the chronic side. Mad honey's risk is primarily acute — dose-response at the time of use. Kava's risks accumulate with chronic heavy patterns. Neither is without risk, but the risk window is different, which matters for how you think about frequency and long-term habits.
