third listing this month with "meets EFSA grayanotoxin limits" sat in a little green box on the product page. no report, no batch number, no link, nothing. asked one of them which opinion they meant and got two paragraphs about mountain air. does anyone here actually know what that phrase is supposed to mean, because im increasingly sure the sellers dont
It usually means nothing, and it means nothing because two separate things are being mashed together.
EFSA writes scientific opinions. That is risk assessment — they gather what data exists, derive health-based reference values where the evidence supports it, and are normally blunt about where the data is thin. It is advice to decision makers. EFSA does not set maximum levels in food and cannot ban anything; that sits with legislators in the contaminants rules, which get amended over time, so read the consolidated text rather than somebody's summary from four years ago.
So an opinion existing is not a ban, and "EFSA compliant" isn't a status anyone can confer on you — there is no certificate with that name. The only thing that would support a claim like that is a lab result for the batch in your jar, with numbers and a date on it.
"EFSA approved" is the one that gets me, because there is nothing there to approve. It's a textbook implied claim — it reads as though a regulator looked at that specific jar and signed it off, and if you asked the seller to produce the sign-off they would have to go and invent one.
